Ruby Barb Care Guide Description

The Ruby Barb, scientifically known as Pethia nigrofasciata, is a strikingly beautiful fish that is cherished for its vibrant red coloration and active nature. This hardy and lively species can bring a splash of color and energy to any community aquarium.

Behavior: Ruby Barbs are active and social fish that thrive in groups. They are known for their playful and sometimes boisterous behavior, making them an engaging species to watch. While generally peaceful, they can occasionally nip at the fins of slower-moving or long-finned tank mates.

Tank Requirements: Provide a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room and a variety of hiding spots. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended to house a small group of Ruby Barbs comfortably. Include plants, rocks, and driftwood to create a natural and stimulating environment.

Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C) and a pH level between 6.0 to 7.5. Ruby Barbs prefer slightly acidic to neutral water. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to keep the water quality high and ensure their health.

Diet: Ruby Barbs are omnivorous and will readily accept a variety of foods. Provide a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, as well as live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Including vegetable matter in their diet, such as blanched spinach or spirulina-based foods, will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.

Compatibility: Ruby Barbs are generally peaceful and do well in community tanks with other active and similarly sized fish. They can coexist with species like tetras, rasboras, danios, and other barbs. Avoid housing them with slow-moving or long-finned fish to prevent fin nipping.

By adhering to these care guidelines, you can provide a suitable environment for the Ruby Barb and promote its health and well-being in your aquarium.
